You can add tasks to the side panel in some Google Workspace apps.
Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
Important: If you can't see Tasks app, click the arrow in the bottom right of the screen to expand the panel.
On the right, click Tasks .
Tip: In Gmail spaces, you can create, assign, edit, complete, and delete group tasks.
In Tasks, each task goes in a list. To start, there's a default list that you can add tasks to.
Adding a due date and time adds the task to your calendar:
Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
On the right, click Tasks .
At the top, click Add a task .
Enter a task.
To add a date and time, click Date/time.
Tips:
To repeat a task, next to “Date/time,” click Repeat . Tasks with subtasks can't repeat.
In Google Calendar, a certain number of upcoming instances of a repeating task will appear on the calendar grid, and as time passes, new ones will be added automatically.
Important: To reorder your tasks, change your sort options to “My order.” At the top of a list, click List options My order.
On your computer, select an option:
Open Tasks in Calendar.
On the right of the side panel, click Tasks .
Click and hold a task.
Move the task where you want.
Tip: To reorder a task you're editing, on the left, click and hold Drag .
Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
On the right, click Tasks .
Click the task you want to change.
Change the task info.
Tips:
If you want to change the date and time of the next repeating task in a series, click the date.
To edit the date and time for all tasks, at the bottom, click the repetition info.
On your computer, select an option:
Open Tasks in Calendar.
On the right of the side panel, click Tasks .
Select an option:
To find completed tasks, next to "Completed," click the Right arrow .
To hide completed tasks, click the Down arrow .
Tip: You can hide completed tasks that show in your calendar.
If you add due dates for your tasks, you can easily sort them to see which items are coming due soon. Just sort your tasks by date.
On your computer, select an option:
Open Tasks in Calendar.
On the right of the side panel, click Tasks .
At the top of a list, click List options .
Under "Sort by," click Date.
Tips:
Under “Past,” tasks you haven’t completed by a specific date appear at the top.
All uncompleted tasks from the last 365 days are available on your current day.
If you have a regular, recurring obligation, add a task that repeats. For example, you might need to send out a weekly read-out to your project team, or submit a monthly expense report. You can have a task repeat every day, week, month, or year.
Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
On the right, click Tasks .
Click an existing task or create a new task.
To add a date and time, click Date/time.
Next to “Date/time,” click Repeat .
Under “Repeats every,” select day, week, month, or year.
Under “Ends,” select an option to create a recurring task:
With no end date, select Never.
With a specific end date, select On, then choose a date.
That ends after a certain number of occurrences, select After, then select a number of occurrences.
Click OK.
If your task consists of several individual things that need to get done, add subtasks. Your subtasks appear indented beneath the main task, and you can check off each item as you get it done.
Choose an option:
Right-click a task and select Add a subtask.
Under the main task, add a new task and press Ctrl + ] (Windows) or Command + ] (Mac).
Next to the main task, click Edit and in the Add subtasks field, enter a task.
To un-indent a subtask, right-click the subtask and click Unindent. You can also click on the subtask and press Ctrl + [ (Windows) or Command + [ (Mac).
In addition to your default task list, you can create and name additional lists to categorize your tasks. For example, you might want to track personal tasks in a separate list from work tasks. Or track tasks from separate projects in their own list.
Create and name a new list
Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
On the right, click Tasks .
At the top, click the Down arrow .
Click Create a new list.
Enter a name.
Click Done.
Switch between lists
Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive, or a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
On the right, click Tasks .
At the top, click the Down arrow .
Click the list you want.
Move a task between lists
On your computer, open Tasks in Calendar.
Click and hold a task.
Drag and drop the task to a different list.
Delete a list
On your computer, select an option:
Open Tasks in Calendar.
On the right of the side panel, click Tasks .
On the right of the list, click More Delete list.
You can also use Tasks to keep track of emails you need to respond to. Just drag the email to Tasks, and it appears as a task in a list. You can then edit the task, add details, and schedule recurring or one-time reminders
Go to Gmail.
On the right, click Tasks .
Find the email you want to save as a task.
Drag and drop the email to the side panel.
To add a date and time, click Date/time.
If a chat you have with a co-worker results in an action item, just add the chat to your Task list. It will appear in the last list you viewed in Tasks.
Add a chat to Tasks
Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
Hover over a chat message you want to add as a task.
Click More Add to Tasks . Your task will appear in the last list you viewed.
Move the task to another list
On your computer, open Tasks in Calendar.
Click and hold a task.
Drag and drop the task to a different list.
To easily schedule a task with a due date, add it directly to your calendar in the time slot that it's due. You'll see it both in your Calendar grid, and in a Tasks list. When you add a task in Calendar, you can do many of the things you do in Tasks, such as make it repeat, mark it complete, and more.
Add a task to your calendar

Go to Google Calendar.
Choose an option:
In your calendar, click an empty slot on your calendar.
In the top left, click Create.
Click Task.
Enter your task details.
Click Save.
Tips:
Any tasks with dates you create in the Tasks app appear on Google Calendar.
A list of all uncompleted tasks from the last 365 days is available in your current day on Google Calendar.
Mark a task complete in Calendar
On your computer, open Google Calendar.
Click the task you want to update.
At the bottom right, click Mark completed.
Tips:
If you manage tasks in the side panel or from Tasks in Calendar, on the left of the task, click Complete .

Add a recurring task in Calendar
Open Google Calendar.
On the calendar grid, click any empty space.
Below the title, select Task.
Below the date, click Does not repeat.
Select an option:
Select a pre-set frequency, such as Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Annually. Click Save.
Select Custom, then set your preferred recurrence frequency or an end date. Click Done Save.
Manage tasks in Calendar
Open a full screen version of Tasks to see and manage all your tasks.
Open Google Calendar.
At top, click Switch to tasks .
(Optional) To return to the calendar grid, click Switch to Calendar .
